When foods were stored with ice

This work for a restaurant in Montefioralle has “stimulated our appetite”. It was a question of cleaning up this beautiful piece of furniture, from decades of dirt and various oxidations. Born to keep food fresh with ice, it had probably been changed in the refrigerator in the late fifties. The wires and the switches after which the furniture is made are noted. The compressor was located above. Almost certainly it was used in a butchery or similar store. Once, in homes, those who could afford it, owned smaller ones and there were not many foods to keep in the fridge like today. Inside, the refrigerating radiator was placed; a piece of industrial archeology that alone would have furnished a room. Very hard to find! The client wanted to keep this original character, including the changes made over the years. Of course, today’s use is no longer a fridge but a display of wine.

The restoration

The work consisted in cleaning the outside and the inside, covered with zinc sheet, to bring it to a level of cleanliness and hygiene suitable for storing wine. Even the radiator has been cleaned (inside there are still the ice cube trays). The general conditions were not bad except for some shortcomings in the low frame and infiltration of water in the legs that had weakened the structure of the wood. After the consolidation of the roof, we moved on to remove the old paint that revealed a beautiful compact larch. Shelves similar to those that could have been created
