In the world of vintage collecting, few objects evoke the charm of the Roaring Twenties like the portable gramophone.
Recently, at our Giakke & Mikke workshop in Calcinaia (Florence), we completed two conservative and functional restoration projects on these iconic pieces. This is one of the two: the Columbia Grafonola Viva-Tonal No. 100, in its black version.
History in a Suitcase: Columbia Viva-Tonal
Launched by Columbia Records to compete with Victrola models, the Grafonola No. 100 represented the cutting edge of early 20th-century portable sound technology. Designed to “bring music anywhere,” this engineering gem required meticulous work to shine again—and, above all, to play as it should.
The Restoration Process: Before and After
Restoring a vintage gramophone is not just about aesthetics; it’s a delicate balance of precision mechanics. Here are the technical interventions carried out in our workshop:
1. Mechanical and Motor Overhaul
To ensure consistent and faithful playback, we worked on the heart of the device:
-
Complete motor overhaul: Disassembly, cleaning, and lubrication.
-
Mainspring restoration: Essential for proper winding autonomy.
-
Automatic brake adjustment: For precise stopping at the end of the record.
-
Crank restoration: Returned to smooth, fully functional operation.
2. Sound Restoration (Soundbox and Diaphragm)
The sound quality of a Grafonola depends on the soundbox. We performed:
-
Diaphragm restoration: To eliminate distortion and restore depth to the sound.
-
Soundbox overhaul: Fine micro-mechanical work to preserve the grooves of 78 rpm records.
3. Aesthetics and Conservation
Finally, we restored the dignity of the gramophone’s exterior:
-
Replacement and restoration of the felt lining: For an authentic look.
-
Touch-up of the original paint: Using non-invasive techniques to preserve the historical patina.
