This late 19th-century chest of drawers presented several structural and finishing problems: one missing leg, detached veneer in several areas, and a marble top that was cracked or stained.
It was a well-built piece of furniture, but not particularly valuable, so a transformation rather than a conservative restoration was chosen.
The intervention included:
-
Removal of the first, narrower drawer to lighten the front and improve proportions;
-
Removal of the original decorative moldings, which were already damaged;
-
Replacement of the onion-shaped legs with a new, more linear model that enhances the overall shape;
-
Sanding and reinforcement of the wooden structure;
-
A new finishing and color, selected to give the piece a bold, contemporary character.
The result is a chest of drawers completely renewed in both proportions and style, while preserving its original solidity.
This is an example of how, through a targeted intervention and careful design, even a piece that is “too old to be antique” can regain both aesthetic and functional value.
