Recently, we had the opportunity to work on a fascinating and challenging project: the recreation of the wooden parts of the frame of a vintage Mercedes convertible top. Commissioned by a client, we were tasked with bringing this essential component of the car, which had been almost completely worn out by time, back to life.

The Challenge of Restoration

The client provided us with what remained of the original frame, a collection of pieces that told the story of years of use and exposure to the elements. The frame’s structure was made of iron, and we rebuilt the wooden parts that attached to it. Our mission was clear: to use these pieces and our knowledge of the car model to recreate a frame that was not only functional but also faithful to the original.

The Project: Recreating History

Initially, we carefully studied the provided pieces, analyzing every detail to understand how the frame was originally constructed. Using these fragments as a guide, we developed a detailed plan for the reconstruction. Every phase of the process was executed with precision, from identifying the type of wood needed to reproducing the original joints.

The Selection of Materials

To ensure the highest quality and durability, we chose high-quality wood, the same type used in the original production. The wood was treated and carefully prepared to withstand the elements and the test of time, ensuring that the new frame was robust and reliable.

The Creation of the Frame

Each component was precisely shaped, respecting the original measurements and characteristics. The manual craftsmanship allowed us to achieve a result of the highest quality, with every detail meticulously attended to.

Assembly and Finishing

Once the frame was completed, we moved on to the final assembly directly on the car. This step was crucial for making the last adjustments and ensuring that the frame fit perfectly with the car’s body. Every adjustment was made with precision, guaranteeing an impeccable installation.

The Final Result

The result was a convertible top frame that not only mirrored the original but also added a touch of modernity and sturdiness. The client was extremely satisfied with the work, appreciating our ability to combine respect for the original with innovation and craftsmanship.
